Between March 20 and March 25, 2011 a high pressure system was lingering over Central Europe and Northern Italy. Although the area where I reside is certainly not renowned for its seeing conditions, on March 24 I managed to pull off a resonably decent image of Saturn. Labor Day's Saturn

On May 1st, 2008, I managed to take this shot of Saturn, most likely the last of this season (which has been haunted by really bad seeing conditions) until the Ringed Planet emerges back from sunlight next winter. All data are on the picture itself.

Il 1° maggio 2008 sono riuscito a realizzare questa immagine di Saturno, molto probabilmente l'ultima di questa stagione (che è stata contraddistinta da condizioni di seeing veramente scarso) fino al prossimo inverno, quando il "pianeta dagli anelli" riemergerà dal bagliore della luce solare. Tutti i dati di ripresa sono contenuti nell'immagine stessa.

On March 18th, 2008, the weather was once again clear, but the Foehn wind was sweeping Northern Italy's flatland, as it has (too) often happened during this past winter. No surprise the seeing was really crappy. In spite of that, I managed to pull off the following image featuring Saturn roaming the heavens with five of its satellites:

E' passato un bel po' di tempo dall'ultima pubblicazione su questo sito di qualcosa legato all'astronomia; inoltre, non aggiorno la galleria di immagini da oltre un anno, e adesso mi trovo con un notevole arretrato di immagini. Vorrei inoltre risistemare il motore di gestione della galleria, dato che la gestione via FTP con JAlbum (che per altro è un ottimo prodotto) è diventata ormai insostenibile. Ma bando alle ciance, e andiamo al sodo:

Two Astronomy Articles

It's been quite a while since I last posted something astronomy related; plus, I haven't been updating my image gallery for a year, and now I have a huge backlog of pictures. I would like to rengineer my gallery engine, since FTP-based management with JAlbum (which is a very cool product, by the way) has become a real pain in the butt. But 'nuff said, let's go back to the real stuff:

On the 13th of december, Fabrizio Giudici and I will be giving a short talk (as a BOF session) on a Java-based parallel computing project of ours. This very application describes an application of parallel computing to image processing, with a view also to astronomy-oriented tasks.
