Every year, for 39 years now, the International Astronomical Youth Camp (IAYC) takes place somewhere in Europe. About seventy people from many different countries live together for three weeks. They are aged between 16 and 24 years old and share the same interest: astronomy. The IAYC is different from most astronomical camps for two
reasons: the international character and the fact that you do your own small research project, not just accepting facts but rather discovering them yourself. The IAYC is also not like a hotel where one follows a summer school or an astronomy course. Every participant with his or her own cultural background forms an important piece in the complex puzzle of camp life.
This years camp will take place in the "Jugendgastehaus Mortelgrund", a youth hostel in the South East of Germany. The house is located about 2,5 km from the small village of Sayda, which has about 2.300 inhabitants. It is a pleasant wooded area in the "Erzgebirge", about 45km from Dresden.
The IAYC is an international youth camp with participants from about 20 different countries. As a participant you work for three weeks in one of the 8 working groups - together with other young people - on astronomy related projects. These projects are done in a working group of your choice and also depend on your own interest. The working groups themselves will be led by young scientists from the IAYC team and concentrate on a specific field in astronomy. This year these are: Ancient Astronomy, Astrogenises, Basics of Astronomy, Compact Objects, Extragalactic astrophysics, Observational Astronomy, Radio Astronomy and Imaging processing. Of course apart from the astronomical program, there are many non-astronomical activities such as group games, sport events, singing evenings, hiking tours and an
excursion.
The accommodation for the IAYC 2008 will be a very pleasant youth hostel called "Jugendgastehaus Mortelgrund". The house offers plenty of space for all participants and working groups and there will also be a darkroom available to the people who want to develop astropictures. At walking distance there is a field which can be used for observations. The remote location of the house promises excellent observing conditions.
Since it is an international camp, the camp language is English. You should be able and willing to speak English throughout the camp although it is not necessary to speak English fluently. Anyone from 16 to 24 years old and able to communicate in English may participate in the IAYC 2008. The fee for accommodation, full board and the whole program, including the excursion, will be 550 Euro. For interested persons who are in the situation of not being able to pay the camp fee themselves, a limited number of grants is available.

Ogni anno, da 39 anni oggi, l’IAYC (International Astronomical Youth Camp) si svolge da qualche parte in Europa. Circa settanta persone da diversi Paesi del Vecchio Continente trascorrono insieme tre settimane; hanno un’età compresa tra 16 e 24 anni, e condividono una stessa passione: l’astronomia. L’IAYC è diverso dalla maggior parte degli altri campi/soggiorni astronomici per due ragioni: il suo carattere internazionale e il fatto che a ciascuno sia data la possibilità di sviluppare un proprio progetto, non limitandosi ad accettare i fatti, ma esplorandoli e scoprendoli in prima persona. L’IAYC, inoltre, non è come un albergo dove si segue una scuola estiva o un corso di astronomia; ogni partecipante con il proprio patrimonio culturale costituisce un’importante tessera di quel complesso mosaico che è la vita del campo.
Il campo di quest’anno si svolgerà nella "Jugendgastehaus Mortelgrund", un ostello della gioventù nel sudest della Germania. La casa è a circa 2.5 km da Sayda, piccolo villaggio di circa 2300 abitanti situato in una ridente zona boscosa nelle “Erzgebirge” (“Colline Metallifere”), più o meno a 45 km da Dresda.
L’IAYC è un campo astronomico giovanile con partecipanti da circa 20 differenti Paesi. Come partecipante, si lavora per tre settimane in uno degli 8 gruppi di lavoro – insieme ad altri giovani appassionati – su progetti legati all’astronomia. Questi progetti sono sviluppati in un gruppo di lavoro a scelta del partecipante, e l’argomento del progetto dipende principalmente dalle preferenze ed inclinazioni personali. Quest’anno i gruppi di lavoro sono: "Ancient Astronomy”, “Astrogenises”, “Basics of Astronomy”, “Compact Objects”, “Extragalactic astrophysics”, “Observational Astronomy”, “Radio Astronomy” and “Imaging processing”. Naturalmente, oltre al lavoro dei gruppi tematici, ci sono molte altre attività a carattere non astronomico, quali giochi di gruppo, sport, eventi canori, gite di trekking e una escursione.
La sistemazione per il campo del 2008 è un bell’ostello della gioventù ("Jugendgastehaus Mortelgrund"), che offre spazio sufficiente per tutti i partecipanti e i gruppi di lavoro; è anche disponibile una camera oscura per lo sviluppo delle proprie astrofotografie; inoltre, dalla casa è raggiungibile a piedi un ampio prato per le osservazioni. Infine, la collocazione lontano da fonti di inquinamento luminoso promette ottime condizioni osservative.
Dato il carattere internazionale del campo, la lingua ufficiale è l’inglese, della quale è necessaria una conoscenza sufficiente (anche se non necessariamente perfetta) e la disponibilità a parlarla per tutta la durata del campo stesso. Chiunque abbia da 16 a 24 anni e sia in grado di esprimersi in inglese può partecipare all’IAYC 2008. La quota di partecipazione, comprendente pensione completa e l’intero programma di attività, è di EUR 550. Per coloro i quali fossero interessati a partecipare, pur non potendosi permettere la quota, è disponibile un numero limitato di “borse”.
